Thursday was the first day of our Route 66 road trip. We’d seen the end of the route in Santa Monica, now we’ve had a chance to actually drive some of the road! We won’t be travelling every mile of the historic road, partly because some parts don’t exist these days, and also some days we’re pushed for time and might do a few stretches on the interstate, but we’ll try and make a few stops along the way for that authentic Route 66 experience.
Our first photo stop was the Aztec Motel in Monrovia. Driving through Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, Azusa, Glendora, Sandimus, La Verne, Claremont, Upland and Rancho Cucamonga was just delightful. Although the area is quite modern, there is an obvious love for Route 66 culture.
Next was San Bernadino where we stopped at the site of the first ever McDonalds restaurant. Then, a breathtakingly beautiful drive through the Mojave desert took us to Barstow for dinner before diverting off to Las Vegas.
So our first day of the road trip was lots of fun, and exactly what I was hoping for. Can’t wait to see more!
